Permanent Representatives of Viet Nam and Tonga to the United Nations signed a joint communiqué on the establishment of the two countries’ diplomatic relations in New York, the U.S. on September 21 in the presence of Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and Foreign Minister Fekitamoeloa Utoikamanu of Tonga.

Viet Nam has set up diplomatic relations with 193 countries in the world thus far.

Addressing the event, Minister Bui emphasized that the establishment of diplomatic ties marks a historic milestone in the two countries' history as it would bring practical benefits to their peoples and to peace, cooperation, and friendship in the world.

Bui suggested both sides exchange delegations at all levels and consider setting up bilateral mechanisms to create frameworks for long-term cooperation, especially in economy, trade, and tourism.

He also invited Foreign Minister Fekitamoeloa Utoikamanu to pay an official visit to Viet Nam.

In reply, Minister Fekitamoeloa Utoikamanu expressed her wish to cooperate with Viet Nam in such areas as tourism, climate change adaptation and aquaculture.

Both sides agreed to foster collaboration and mutual support at multilateral forums as well as cooperation between ASEAN and Pacific Island countries./.
